What is Awakening Yoga?

Awakening Yoga is a modern, progressive yoga system, rooted in Hatha yoga, designed to honor the ritual of traditional yoga with a practical and functional approach to moving the breath, body, and mind.

The practice is both vigorous and accessible, allowing all levels of practitioners to build strength, fluidity, and mindfulness in movement.

Who can practice here?

Anyone can practice. Whether you have years of yoga under your belt or you’re only ever barefoot in the shower, there is something for you here. The system, the practice, and the instruction is all designed to meet you where you are—to find what is available to you now and to ask of you what else might be available yet.

Dave Inman is a Certified Awakening Yoga Teacher and Breathing Coach.

Dave started practicing vinyasa yoga in 2012, initially in response to lifelong muscle stiffness and years-long back pain after a bicycling accident. As a practitioner, Dave often felt both curious about and frustrated by the friction between what a yoga pose seemed like it should be and how it felt in his own body, a tension that led him to study the Awakening Yoga system under the direction of Patrick Beach and Carling Harps. Dave’s instruction is rooted primarily in his training in Awakening Yoga, but is also informed by his experience and exposure to other approaches to yoga, movement, and breathing.

As a teacher, Dave endeavors to embrace and represent yoga as a fully human experience—warts and all. Sometimes we all lose our balance. Sometimes it feels better if we use props. Sometimes poses don’t look like they do in pictures (or like the person practicing next to us). Always, it’s a process of learning, of discovery. Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice just makes.
